In a world facing climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental degradation, educating and empowering the next generation is more crucial than ever. “Roots and the Future: Environmental Sustainability through Archaeobotany”, coordinated by Green Behavior Youth Organization, is a project that combines history, science, and sustainability to prepare young people for the environmental challenges of today and tomorrow.

🌍 Understanding the Past to Protect the Future

Archaeobotany—the study of plant remains in archaeological sites—provides unique insights into how humans have interacted with nature throughout history. By examining seeds, pollen, wood, and other plant remnants, archaeobotany reveals past agricultural practices, food diversity, climate changes, and natural resource management.

Understanding these historical patterns is not just an academic exercise; it is vital for today’s environmental sustainability efforts. By learning how humans adapted to changing ecosystems in the past, young people can develop innovative strategies to protect biodiversity, preserve natural resources, and ensure food security in the future.

🎯 The Project’s Purpose

The project is designed with several key objectives in mind:

  • Raise Environmental Awareness: Equip youth with knowledge of the connections between humans, plants, and ecosystems, emphasizing the role of archaeobotany in sustainability.

  • Promote Sustainable Practices: Inspire young participants to adopt eco-friendly habits in daily life, from responsible agriculture to biodiversity conservation.

  • Empower Youth as Change Agents: Give young people the tools, confidence, and knowledge to advocate for environmental protection in their communities.

  • Foster Cross-Cultural Collaboration: Bring together youth from Iceland, Croatia, Georgia, Turkey, and Ukraine to share perspectives and work collectively toward global environmental challenges.

  • Strengthen Youth Work Capacity: Develop innovative educational tools and methods for youth workers to integrate sustainability and environmental education into their programs.

🌱 Why It’s Important

  1. Bridging Knowledge Across Generations: By linking historical human-plant interactions with modern environmental issues, the project helps youth understand that sustainability is both a legacy and a responsibility.

  2. Empowering Active Citizenship: Participants are encouraged to take initiative, influence policies, and implement environmental projects in their communities, creating a ripple effect beyond the project itself.

  3. Building Skills for the Future: Leadership, teamwork, problem-solving, and communication skills gained through the project prepare young people for active roles as environmental advocates.

  4. Promoting Cultural Understanding: Working with peers from multiple countries fosters intercultural dialogue, collaboration, and global perspectives on environmental challenges.

  5. Inspiring Systemic Change: The project contributes to long-term sustainability goals by nurturing environmentally conscious, socially responsible young citizens capable of driving positive change.

🌐 Connecting Roots to the Future

“Roots and the Future” is more than a project—it is a bridge connecting the lessons of the past to the solutions of tomorrow. By exploring archaeobotany, youth learn how humans have historically lived in harmony with—or sometimes against—nature, and how these lessons can inform sustainable practices today.

Green Behavior Youth Organization believes that empowered youth are the key to a sustainable future. Through projects like this, young people not only gain knowledge but also the motivation and tools to act as change-makers in their communities and beyond.

🌱 By understanding our roots, we can grow a future where environmental sustainability is not just a goal but a shared responsibility.

🌍 Bridging the Past and the Future

From August 18–24, 2025, young people from Iceland, Croatia, Georgia, Turkey, and Ukraine came together in the beautiful town of Selfoss, Iceland, for an inspiring journey into archaeobotany. Coordinated by Green Behavior Youth Organization, the project “Roots and the Future: Environmental Sustainability through Archaeobotany” combined environmental education, cultural exchange, and hands-on learning to empower youth as advocates for sustainable development.

Archaeobotany, the study of plant remains in archaeological contexts, allows us to understand how humans and plants have interacted throughout history. By exploring past agricultural practices, biodiversity, and the relationship between humans and nature, participants gained insights into environmental sustainability and the preservation of both natural and cultural heritage.

🎯 Project Objectives

The project aimed to:

  • Raise Environmental Awareness: Equip young participants with knowledge about archaeobotany and its role in sustainability.

  • Foster Personal and Social Development: Encourage teamwork, leadership, problem-solving, and social responsibility.

  • Promote Cultural Exchange: Bring together youth from diverse backgrounds to share ideas and collaborate on environmental solutions.

  • Encourage Sustainable Practices: Provide practical examples through workshops, field activities, and discussions on biodiversity, recycling, and sustainable agriculture.

  • Empower Youth Civic Engagement: Inspire participants to advocate for environmental protection within their communities.

  • Strengthen Youth Work Capacity: Offer innovative tools and methods for youth workers to integrate environmental education into their programs.

🌱 Engaging Activities

The project included interactive and hands-on activities designed to make learning about archaeobotany fun and memorable:

1. What is Archaeobotany?Participants learned about archaeobotany, the types of plant remains studied (seeds, pollen, wood, etc.), and how this knowledge helps understand past human-plant interactions and supports environmental sustainability.

2. Plant Adventure: Exploration in the Garden of the PastA unique exhibition of plant remains, leaves, flowers, and plant-based artworks allowed participants to explore four thematic concepts about plant use in history.

3. Archaeobotany TalesIn groups, participants created stories combining scientific facts and creative imagination, then illustrated their tales. These stories were later shared in presentations, helping youth express what they learned creatively.

4. Archaeobotanical ReenactmentsParticipants actively reenacted historical plant-related practices, gaining hands-on experience and a deeper understanding of past agricultural and botanical knowledge.

5. Secrets of the SoilThrough examining soil and plant remains, participants experienced firsthand how archaeobotanists uncover clues about ancient ecosystems and human interactions with nature.

👩‍🌾 Participant Profile

The project brought together 40 youth from Iceland, Croatia, Georgia, Turkey, and Ukraine. 15 participants with fewer opportunities were included to ensure inclusivity and equal access.

After a transformative week in Milan for the Erasmus+ project “Hold Your Breath: Air Pollution”, our youth workers have returned home — inspired, motivated, and ready to take action. The project, hosted between 9–15 August 2025, united participants from Italy, Iceland, Lithuania, Hungary, and Turkey to explore the global issue of air pollution and develop local solutions.

Air pollution affects millions of people every day. Through interactive sessions and discussions, our team learned about:

The types and sources of air pollutants

The link between pollution, public health, and climate change

Strategies to promote eco-friendly habits and cleaner communities

The workshops encouraged critical thinking and collaboration, helping youth workers develop practical solutions adaptable to their local contexts — including Iceland.

One of the most impactful parts of the project was the digital communication workshop, where participants learned to create powerful online content to raise environmental awareness. Our Icelandic youth plan to launch a #CleanAirIceland social media campaign, sharing what they learned and inspiring others to adopt greener lifestyles.

The project also provided a platform for intercultural dialogue. Meeting peers from different countries allowed participants to understand environmental challenges from multiple perspectives and exchange creative ideas. This experience reinforced the importance of global cooperation in addressing shared environmental problems.

Back in Iceland, Green Behavior Youth Organization is committed to continuing the mission of “Hold Your Breath.” Together with our youth workers, we will:

Organize community discussions on air pollution

Collaborate with local schools to promote sustainable habits

Share resources and knowledge gained in Milan with Icelandic youth networks

The project’s spirit lives on — in every small step towards sustainability, every conversation started, and every young person inspired to protect our planet.
